WHAT IS LAUGHTER YOGA?
Laughter yoga is a unique concept where we laugh for no reason; without relying on the use of jokes, humour or comedy.
Laughter Yoga exercises are simple, structured and entertaining. They are easy and safe, and provide a genuine form of physical exercise. They are appropriate for all, regardless of their cognitive, sensorial or motor abilities/limitations. People's participation is invited and not imposed. Laughter Yoga appears to lift depression and replace it with a positive outlook. Health improves, many chronic ailments disappear, the exercise improves mobility, communication and relations can also improve greatly for the better.
Laughter yoga is done through a combination of deep breathing exercises and laughter exercises.
There are four steps:
-
Clapping and movement
-
Breathing exercises
-
Childlike playfulness and clapping
-
Laughter yoga exercises.
The session is usually ended with a a guided relaxation or laughter meditation followed by a shorter relaxation (whichever is most suitable for clients and the session).
BENEFITS OF LAUGHTER YOGA – LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE.
Through creating childlike play, eye contact and group energy even fake laughter will eventually turn into real laughter. Laughter has many advantages such as helping to build up a strong immune system; it releases endorphins creating feel-good hormones, builds communication and relationship skills and very importantly enables the release of stress. Laughter yoga acts as aerobic exercise, tones muscles, encourages positive thinking, relaxes the whole body and promotes happiness, energy and wellbeing. Suitable for almost everyone. It’s great fun.
Most people feel that if they are able to laugh naturally they don’t need to join a Laughter Club, but the fact is that spontaneous laughter is not sufficient to bring significant physiological and biochemical changes.
Here are the 3 basic reasons why Laughter Yoga is essential to get maximum health benefits:
-
In order to get scientifically proven health benefits of laughter, we need to laugh continuously for at least for 10 to 15 minutes. Since in Laughter Yoga we do laughter as an exercise, we can prolong our laughter as long as we want; it brings measurable physiological changes like oxygen levels in the blood, muscle relaxation, blood circulation and release of certain hormones in the body.
-
To reap the health benefits of laughter, laughter has to be loud and deep, coming from the diaphragm. It should be a belly laugh. It might not be socially acceptable to laugh loudly, but Laughter Yoga clubs provide a safe environment where one can laugh loudly and heartily without any social implication.
-
Natural laughter that courses through our life depends upon many reasons and conditions, but there are not that many things make us laugh daily. That means we are leaving laughter to chance, it may happen it may not. In contrast, in Laughter Yoga club we are not leaving laughter to chance, but doing it out of commitment. This is a guaranteed way of getting the health benefits of laughter.
